DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY INC

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world.

Founded on January 13, 1913 by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University, the Sorority is currently a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educated women.

This includes 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in the United States, Canada, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea.

The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust:

  • Economic Development
  • Physical and Mental Health
  • Educational Development
  • Political Awareness and Involvement
  • International Awareness and Involvement

Our Chapter History

The South Bend Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on Dec 3, 1955. as Epsilon Mu Sigma Chapter. 

Charter Members were Theresa Harrison-Ash, Frances Poindexter-Dixon, Marjorie Willis-Dowdell, Peggy Flowers-Eskridge, Goldie Ivory, June Brown-Locke, Kitty Bowden-Smith, Joyce Brown-Stith, Audrey Elliott-Vagner.

Some of their initial events included a book mobile to deliver literature to those bed ridden, a Change of Season Rummage sale with all proceeds allocated to a scholarship fund, and finally the unique Coffee Hour contest.

Today our chapter service area covers St. Joseph and Elkhart counties — totaling 24 cities. We have 33 members and are defined as a small chapter in the Mighty Mighty Midwest. The South Bend Alumnae Chapter is productive, proud, and progressive in doing the wonderful & meaningful work of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
